Innate/Non specific:
Adaptive:
T cells destroy and activate macrophages
- Doesn't target pathogens
- Fast response
- Composed of phagocytes and proteins
- Activates the adaptive immune system
Adaptive:
- Specific to pathogen
- Provides long lasting protection (memory B cells)
- Carried out by lymphocytes
T cells destroy and activate macrophages
Cell Mediated and Humoral
Cell mediated response:
Infected cells display foreign antigens on their membranes and alert cytotoxic T cells. The T cells initiate a command for the infected cell to self destruct, preventing farther damage.
Humoral response:
- Keeps mutated or "sick" cells from reproducing
- Targets and kills off infected cells
- Cytotoxic T cells
Infected cells display foreign antigens on their membranes and alert cytotoxic T cells. The T cells initiate a command for the infected cell to self destruct, preventing farther damage.
Humoral response:
- B cells produce antibodies
- Attacks pathogens in the bloodstream
Cell Mediated Humoral
Second Encounter
Fast response
- First time: Pathogen is new, B cells have to create antibodies
- Second time: Memory cells from the first time react
- Pathogens are marked much faster and destroyed
